Para Los Músicos - Audacity

Conozco varias personas que gustan de la música y que también son músicos. Los programas para grabar música instrumental creada por uno mismo pueden ser bastante caros y grabar un CD o alguna canción en un estudio profesional puede costar unos cuantos miles de dólares.
Entre los programas que he estado usando últimamente, encontré uno llamado Audacity, el cual ya ha estado en el Internet por mucho tiempo.
Audacity es completamente gratuito, siendo un programa de código fuente abierto ("open source"). Actualmente lo uso en mi máquina en Linux y funciona bastante bien.
Audacity permite grabar varios canales. Una de las pruebas que realicé fue de primero grabar el arpegio de una canción, luego el rasgueo y finalmente, algo de bajos. Cada una de las grabaciones se realizó en un canal distinto y al final, pude convertir el audio final a MP3 en cuestión de minutos. La conversión a MP3 requiere de un "plugin" llamado LAME, el cual se puede descargar de http://lame.buanzo.com.ar/Lame_v3.98.2_for_Audacity_on_Windows.exe
La calidad del MP3 final fue "decente" y no tan grande, puesto que la compresión fue bastante alta.
Tampoco es necesario comprar una tarjeta de sonido, puesto que se puede usar el conector del micrófono (rosado o rojo, en la mayoría de tarjetas de sonido que he visto) como línea de entrada o la línea de entrada en sí (azul o celeste, en la mayoría de tarjetas de sonido que he visto).
Para la grabación usé mi guitarra acústica, a la cual le hice instalar un sistema de amplificación para poder conectarla a un amplificador convencional.
En caso que sepan cantar, también pueden, luego de grabar las pistas de audio, grabar la de voz y convertir luego todo a un archivo MP3.

One New Gadget For My Personal Use

I came across a new gadget for which I had been searching for some time: The Universal Wireless Keyboard for PDA and Smart Phone KB-SK6688.
This little foldable keyboard is great. It worked almost out of the box with my Palm T|X. The installation of the PRC file took less than 1 minute and then I was able to use the keyboard with almost all the punctuation signs that I needed/wanted (I type a lot in Spanish).
This keyboard will help me use my Palm T|X a lot more efficiently, since I will not have to use the keystrokes or "punch" the screen with the pilot stylus. The size of the keyboard is big enough as to fit my fingers and the keyboard layout is the standard qwerty layout, so I do not have to learn any new skills to use it.
The weight is also nothing to worry about: The keyboard weighs only a couple of ounces.
The operation of the keyboard depends on a standard 1.5 V AAA battery, so there are no special batteries or power sources needed.
I would recommend it. I tested it on a Palm T|X by just installing the prc file for Palm 5.X, reset the Palm T|X and start working with it. This is maybe the best keyboard I have seen for my Palm T|X. The size maybe a bit bigger than the leather pouch that I have for my Palm, but who cares?
I will have to find the ¿ and the ¡ sign, but I do not worry much about those, at least for now. I will be taking more notes, like "El Día Que La Tierra Perdió Gravedad" and posting them, if I get more time.

Oración De Un Padre

Comparto esta vez con ustedes una oración interesante que me dio mi propio padre, mucho antes de ser yo mismo padre.

Dame, ¡oh Señor! un hijo que sea lo suficientemente fuerte para saber cuándo es débil y lo bastante valeroso para enfrentarse consigo mismo cuando sienta miedo; un hijo que sea orgulloso y reflexivo en la derrota honrosa; humilde y magnámino en la victoria.
Dame un hijo que nunca doble la espalda cuando debe erguir el pecho; un hijo que sepa conocerte a ti... y entenderse a sí mismo, que es la piedra fundamental de todo conocimiento.
Condúcelo, te lo ruego, no por el camino cómodo y fácil, sino por la senda áspera, aguijoneada por las dificultades y los retos. Allí déjale aprender a sostenerse en la tempestad y a sentir compasión por los que flaquean.
Dame un hijo cuyo corazón sea puro, cuyos ideales sean nobles; un hijo que se domine a sí mismo, antes de pretender dominar a los demás; un hijo que aprenda a reir, pero que también sepa llorar; un hijo que avance hacia el futuro, pero que no olvide las enseñanzas del pasado.
Y después que le hayas dado todo esto, agrégale, te suplico, suficiente sentido del buen humor, de modo que pueda ser siempre serio, pero que no se tome a sí mismo demasiado en serio.
Dale humildad para que pueda recordar siempre la sencillez de la auténtica sabiduría, la mansedumbre de la verdadera fuerza; entonces yo, su padre, me atreveré a murmurar:
"No he vivido en vano".

How To Get Rid Of Windows Messenger

Windows Messenger can be a pain in the rear if you have it installed on your computer. Click on "Start", then on "Run...", type "gpedit.msc" (without the quotation marks) and hit the "Enter" key.
Under Local Settings, look for "Computer Configuration", "Administrative Templates", "Windows Components", "Windows Messenger". Check the options for "Enable", since it says to NOT start Windows Messenger. Also, do the same under "User Configuration", "Administrative Templates", "Windows Components", "Windows Messenger".
The second part is to go to "Control Panel" ("Start", "Control Panel" or "Start", "Settings", "Control Panel"), "Add/Remove Programs", on the left, click on "Windows Components" and uncheck "MSN Explorer and "Windows Messenger" (scroll all the way down). Finally, click on "OK", I think it is.
The third and last part is to click on "Start", "Run...", type "services.msc" (without the quotation marks) and then hit the "Enter" key. Look for "Windows Messenger" and, if not "Disabled", double click on it, change it from "Automatic" to "Disabled" and then on "Stop".
That should get rid of the Windows Messenger completely.

Note: In Windows Vista or 7, I think that Windows Messenger was replaced by Windows Live Messenger or something else. There is no "Run...", but the small bar that appears above the "Start" button, when you click it, that asks to "Enter Search Term" or something like that.

Some Aberrations In English

Some time ago, I posted an entry in Spanish about some common errors in spelling that some people may experience.
I know that in this age of "smart" phones, "texting", "chatting" and more, people try to shorten words by abbreviating them, but this also has a negative impact in the future: These people will not be able to differentiate between the correct and incorrect way of writing those words.
Some of the aberrations I have noticed in English:

Your instead of You're (or the other way around): Your denotes ownership, you're is the contraction for you are (i. e.: I like your laptop, in this case, the laptop is yours; I know that you're a very smart person, in this case, you're is substituting you are).
This same problem applies to their, there and they're. There denotes location, not here, but there, far from where you are.
It also applies to its and it's, the first one denoting ownership, the second being a contraction.

Person - verb correlation: He, she, it is, not are or am. You are, not is. You have, not has. He, she, it has, not have. Again, if you are using contractions, you use the apostrophe and the appropriate part of the verb.

Proper tense of the verb: In English, verbs have three tenses: Present, past and past participle. There is also the infinitive. The proper use of the tense is important. Sentences with the verb to have followed by another verb denote a present or past participle, in which cases, the verb has to be in past participle and not in present or past (i. e.: I have bought a new program is the proper way and not I have buy a new program).

There are some more, a lot more aberrations in English too, but I wanted to mention only the most common ones.

How To Create Your Own Web Page

This topic comes to my ears from time to time: How do you create your own web page?
First of all, this text is just a draft of what you need and lists only the basic steps to have your own web page up and running in an easy way.

1) Content: The most important part of a web page is its content, so get the ball rolling and start writing your texts for the content. Time and time again, people ask me to create a simple web page, but when asked about the texts, they fail to provide them to me, so I cannot help them at all.

2) Images: Words are always nice to have in a webpage, but pictures or images can help a lot.

2) A web page hosting: This can be your own server, if you have one, in which case, your modem/router has to be set accordingly to allow connections to port 80.

3) The coding: This can be HTML, Ajax, PHP, Flash, CSS, you name it. The simplest web pages are created in HTML. I personally have not cared enough as to learn HTML, since I use a program called FrontPage, from Microsoft, which creates the HTML for me.

4) FTP program: Web pages are created locally (on your computer or the computer of the web page designer) and then "uploaded" to the host using an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program. I use FireFTP for Mozilla Firefox, gFTP in Linux or Filezilla in Microsoft Windows.

5) Time, time, time ... and patience: Do not expect the texts to create themselves or the first draft for your web page to be flawless.
